Homemade Sandwich Bread

Prep Time 3 hours
Cook Time 25 minutes
Total Time 3 hours 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water, warmed (about 110 degrees F)
  • 1/4 cup whole milk, warmed (about 110 degrees F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast (7g)
  • 2 tbsp honey or sugar (25g)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (room temp) (56g)
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt (10g)
  • 3 1/3 cup all-purpose or bread flour (420-430g)

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, warm the water and milk. Sprinkle the yeast and sugar over the water and stir. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until foamy. This indicates that the yeast is activated and ready to use.
  • Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the activated yeast mixture with the flour, salt, and melted butter. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  • First Rise: Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Shape the Loaf: Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Shape it into a loaf by gently flattening it into a rectangle and rolling it up tightly, starting from one of the short ends.
  • Second Rise: Place the shaped loaf into a greased loaf pan, cover it again, and let it rise for another 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size once more
  • Preheat the Oven: Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 425°F
  • Bake the Bread: Once the dough has finished its second rise, uncover it and bake it in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown on top and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Cool and Enjoy: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy your freshly baked Homemade Sandwich Bread!

Notes

  • Make sure to use warm water for activating the yeast, as water that is too hot can kill the yeast and prevent the dough from rising properly.
  • Store any leftover bread in an airtight container or resealable bag at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze slices of bread for longer storage.
